What is Inner Cinema?

The Inner Cinema dreamscapes are made of digitally manipulated microscope photos of networks of human brain cells, made and grown in a lab dish. If you're curious about the science behind the art, please visit the Science page. See the Statement page to learn more about my artistic perspective.

The creator

Sally Salomonsson, PhD student in Molecular Neuroscience at University College London.

Making living human brain cells in a dish in the lab is practically real-life sci-fi, and an integral part of what I do for my PhD project investigating a hereditary form of neurodegenerative disease. In early 2020 I started my path to bioartistry out of awe over the intrinsic beauty and mystery of self-organised brain cell networks - these microcosms of lifeforms within a lifeform. Thus, I decided to take my craft a step beyond the lab bench, into the public eye, and really make them visible to the world through my art project Inner Cinema.
